When the Blue Goose Inn burned to the ground on March 6, 1993, newsrooms across Minnesota sent crews to somehow capture a story, not merely of a midnight fire, but of a lake-country landmark with a colorful history. From Minnesota Public Radio to Twin Cities columnists, writers tried to pin down what made this Garrison stop a favorite for 70 years, from formal diners to people out to Get Loose at the Goose.

Was it a hangout for gangsters? The Goose was around in the Capone years. Kid Cann fished there. Twin Cities owner Tommy Banks held it for years. Until 1947 you could hear slot machines, and poker games ran in the back rooms after that.

The original Blue Goose Inn went up in 1922–23, built by Mr. Ferguson of Duluth when the new Scenic Highway wound along Mille Lacs. His daughter, Margie Cooper, ran it until spring 1926, when she died at 35 from Bright's disease. Early years meant chicken, steak, and walleye off a porch parlor with a fireplace, steaks pan-broiled on a wood-fired stove, pies in the oven.

The E.H. Perry family raised chickens on the grounds through the mid-1930s. George Howard Crosby took over in 1937, got a liquor license, and pushed Garrison to incorporate as a village.

Fishing was part of the place from the mid-1920s: dock, boats, guides. Henry Gabourie had boats in town when a June 1927 storm on Garrison Bay took six lives. After World War II, cigar-toting Mert Moore went from bartender to launch pilot and ran Goose boats, including a 44-footer, into the late 1970s. Larry Goodell and his son Dean had been running homemade launches out of the Goose since 1935.

There used to be a row of cabins for fishing parties. In 1938 they were even tied to the main lodge by a private telephone. In the late 1970s the dance floor got bigger for live music and the crowds that made it a must-stop.

They rebuilt after the 1993 fire. The name is still here, on the gear.
